In diving across the bike for the back brake, Peter knocked the bike over onto the passing pram. For some reason the mother got hysterical as he unwrapped the pram frame from around the baby. After he had disentangled the baby, the woman hit him with what was left of the pram.
What Peter should have known was that what caused the loss of brakes was the way the bike had been squashed down on its forks when it had been tied on the trailer. With the large amount of flex in the forks in a small bike this can sometimes, as in this case, cause the disc to push against the pad and push it back away from the disc and, at the same time, push the brake oil back up the brake lines. Pumping the lever pushes the oil back down the brake lines and brings the pad out to the disc again. Peter didn't need to dive over the top of the bike.
