As Peter's bike went through the gate he saw a startled child sitting on a skateboard heading at collision speed towards him. His fingers, draped over the front brake lever dragged it on. The .25 seconds this saved him, compared with getting his fingers from round the bars to the lever, was just enough to enable him to avoid the child. His heart beating heavily, he sat on his stopped bike for a second to regain his composure. Then he got underway again, moving down towards the road.
